Why Your Hydropool Needs Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential to keep a Hydropool safe, efficient, and enjoyable to use. Over time, the filters, pumps, and heaters can wear down or become blocked.

By scheduling a professional maintenance service with The Hot Tub Engineer, Hydropool owners can enjoy peace of mind and make the most of their spa all year round.

Full System Inspection

During a full system inspection, all key components and control panels are thoroughly checked for any faults or damage.

A full inspection also helps to maintain the pool's energy efficiency, water quality and lifespan.

With a full inspection, you can be sure that your Hydropool is safe and efficient to use.

Deep Cleaning and Water Drain

Deep cleaning removes dirt, bacteria, and chemical build-up that regular maintenance can overlook.

A water drainage service helps to protect the system’s pumps and pipes. This service improves the water quality, prevents unpleasant odours, and extends the life of the spa.

Filter Cleaning or Replacement

Cleaning and replacing filters in Hydropools is vital to keep the spa running smoothly and safely. Clean filters improve the water flow and reduce strain on the pumps and heating system.

Replacing worn or damaged filters helps keep the spa energy-efficient and protects users from poor water quality.

Pump and Heater Maintenance

Regular pump and heater maintenance services help ensure these vital components work properly.

Finding and fixing faults and damage early on can help extend the lifespan of the spa’s system and ensure it performs reliably for longer.

Water Testing and Chemical Balancing

Ensuring you have the correct chemical levels helps protect users from harmful bacteria, prevents damage and reduces the strain on pumps and filters.

Regular water testing ensures the water remains balanced. This can help improve the spa's energy efficiency and extend its lifespan.

Control Panel and Lighting Checks

Ensuring the control panel works correctly allows users to manage their spa easily, while well-maintained lighting enhances the overall spa experience.

This service protects the spa’s electrical system and helps support the spa's energy efficiency.

Frequently Asked Hydropool Questions

A Hydropool hot tub should be serviced according to the model and usage. Self-cleaning models need a major service about twice a year, while non-self-cleaning models should be serviced around four times a year. Swim spas generally require at least one full service annually, or more if used heavily. In between services, you should test the water weekly, clean filters every few weeks, check for damage, and drain and refill the water every three to four months.

Hydropool services usually include a full inspection of the hot tub or swim spa, draining all the water, and cleaning the shell, skimmer, exterior casing, jets, diverter caps, ozone outlets, pillows, and cover. The internal pipework is flushed and sanitised, and in a major service, the heating element is also descaled. The system is refilled with fresh water, pumps are checked and run to clear airlocks, leaks are inspected, and the control panel settings are reset if needed. The cover is treated with protective conditioner, accessories such as dispensers are cleaned, and the outside of the unit and steps are tidied to leave the spa ready for use.

You may need a Hydropool repair if the water will not heat properly, jets are weak or not working, or the water stays cloudy, foamy or smelly despite treatment. Other signs include unusual noises from the pump or motor, leaks or falling water levels, error messages on the control panel, a damaged or ill-fitting cover, or higher-than-normal energy bills, showing the system is struggling.

Some of the most common problems with Hydropool hot tubs and swim spas are water issues such as cloudy, foamy, smelly or green water caused by algae or poor chemical balance, as well as heating problems where the water does not reach the right temperature due to scale build-up or flow restrictions.

Pumps may fail or weaken, causing poor jet performance or leaks from worn seals, while leaks can also come from loose fittings, cracked shells or freezing damage. Electrical faults are another common issue, including error codes, breaker trips and keypad or component failures. Alongside this, the shell can suffer chips, scratches or warping if not installed properly, and covers often deteriorate over time, reducing insulation and efficiency.

In many cases, a Hydropool heater can be repaired rather than replaced, especially if it is fairly new, well-maintained, and the problem is limited to parts such as the thermostat, heating element, sensors, fuses or wiring. Repair is often worthwhile if parts are available and the cost is much lower than a replacement.

However, you may find that a replacement may be the better option if the heater is old, suffers frequent breakdowns, has major damage such as corrosion or a failed heat exchanger, or if repair costs are close to the price of a new unit. A new heater may also be faster and much safer if the existing one shows significant wear.

To fix poor water flow in a Hydropool, first check that the water level is high enough to cover the inlets and skimmer baskets, then clean or replace dirty filters. Remove any debris from the skimmer basket, jets or pump, and make sure all valves are open. If air locks are trapped after refilling, bleed the system to release them. You want to make sure you inspect the pump for any immediate signs of damage or unusual noises, and always check the flow switch or sensors, as faults here can trigger errors. If you're lucky, sometimes turning the power off and restarting the spa can reset the system and restore proper flow.

Error codes on a Hydropool control panel are usually caused by issues such as overheating, either in the water itself (OH) or inside the cabinet (AOH), often due to blocked vents or poor airflow. A high limit error (HL) appears when the heater area gets too hot, usually from weak water flow or dirty filters.

In contrast, a flow error (FLO) indicates little or no water circulation due to low water level, airlocks, closed valves, pump faults or a faulty flow sensor. Other common causes you may encounter include faulty temperature probes (PRR), hardware or circuit board problems (HR), communication faults between the keypad and spa pack (COMM), or software issues (UPL), often seen after updates or in new units.

To locate and repair leaks in a Hydropool, we start by checking how much water is lost over 24 hours with the spa running and again when it is off, as this helps show if the leak is linked to equipment use. Our team will inspect for damp spots, pooling water or wet insulation under the panels, and use dye near jets, fittings or pipes to trace the source.

Some of the most common problem areas are union fittings, pump seals, jets, light fixtures, plumbing joints and even cracks in the shell. Once found, we always turn off the power and lower the water before repairing. Worn gaskets or O-rings can be replaced, small pipe leaks sealed with epoxy or specialist leak sealant, and cracks in the shell patched with repair kits. Damaged plumbing sections usually need to be cut out and replaced, and any wet insulation may also need attention. After repairs, we will often refill the spa and test the system to make sure the leak is fixed.

Yes, we do provide genuine Hydropool replacement parts. We officially stock numerous authentic filters, covers, jets, control panels, and many more parts and accessories made for Hydropool spas and swim spas.

In the UK, Hydropool servicing costs vary, usually according to the type of spa and services you're looking for. A major service for a hot tub is around £399 without a filter or £449.99 with a filter included, while a swim spa major service is about £599.99. Servicing packages with multiple visits per year can reduce the cost per visit. Repairs are often more varied, with minor jobs such as replacing a thermostat or a few jets typically costing £100 to £300, while larger issues involving pumps, heaters or leaks can exceed £500. Replacing seals or gaskets, or any other small repairs, may be under £100 depending on labour and parts.
